Wing Haven FAQ

What is Wing Haven’s Mission?
Wing Haven seeks to extend the love of Jesus Christ by providing relocation services and a full-service place of safety and restoration to women and their children who are victims of domestic abuse.

Wing Haven envisions healing for abused women and their children and the end to the generational cycle of abuse.

How is Wing Haven unique?
Wing Haven is the only organization that assists women and their children with moving away from the abuse and housing for one year, counseling for both the women and children, legal connection support and job training.

What is the history behind Wing Haven’s passion for breaking the cycle of domestic abuse?
Sarah McOwen left her job as a corporate attorney at Morrison and Forrester, LLP to pursue the starting of Wing Haven. Through this process, Sarah has frequently been asked why she has a passion for this issue. Here’s her response:

“When I was about six years old, a friend of my family was in a terribly abusive marriage. One day she called my mom, and said, “He’s out of the house right now, and I need help leaving with my son. Come now!” My mom took me with her to help her friend and what I saw that day has never left me. It’s simple, really, and yet it changed my viewpoint forever. There, leaning against the wall, sitting with his legs pulled to his chest, was a little boy about my age. Our eyes locked for a moment: his full of fear, mine full of sadness and shock. At that moment, a message was inscribed on my heart: “This should not be!”

Where is Wing Haven located?
For the safety of the women and children that Wing Haven serves, the physical location is kept confidential.

How many women and children can Wing Haven serve?
Wing Haven can serve at least 16 children and their moms (approximately 8 women).

Why can’t Wing Haven serve more than eight women and their children at a time?
The Wing Haven site is made up of enough housing to allow for eight families to have their own private home for one year. We believe that it is important for each woman to be empowered to establish a routine with her children that will most closely resemble what they will encounter after leaving Wing Haven.

Additionally, a small group of women and children allows for the creation of community and enables Wing Haven to provide intensive and customized programs for both the women and children.

Why does Wing Haven only serve children under age 5?
Wing Haven seeks to serve children who are five years old or younger for three primary reasons:

  1. Safety: Children under five are generally not in school and so their whereabouts cannot be tracked through school records.
  2. Impact: We seek to help break the generational cycle of violence. Studies show that witnessing abuse in the home is a major reason why men batter and women become victims. We seek to intervene early so that children grow up learning healthy interaction skills.
  3. Building community: We desire to build a community among the clients in part by serving people who are in similar life circumstances, including having children of a similar age. This facilitates greater camaraderie among the women and friendships among the children.

Does Wing Haven provide services to people of any race, faith, creed, or religion?
Yes, Wing Haven will provide services to people of any faith, race, creed, or religion. Wing Haven welcomes diverse backgrounds.

Does Wing Haven proselytize in the provision of its services?
Wing Haven does not proselytize in the provision of its services. Wing Haven, as an organization, exists to enable a woman to end the cycle of abuse for herself and her children. Wing Haven believes in the unalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Through abuse, the clients of Wing Haven have had these rights robbed from them and Wing Haven seeks to restore these rights to them.

Like the Founding Fathers of our country, who came from a Judeo-Christian world-view, Wing Haven also is based on this worldview. Also like the Founding Fathers, Wing Haven believes that governments or institutions must protect the right of the individual in matters of belief to choose for themselves. Given this, Wing Haven is opposed to creating an environment that is closed to religious inquiry. Wing Haven firmly believes that clients should not be pressured or perceive pressure regarding any matter of a spiritual nature.

It should also be noted that "God" is one of the top two motivating factors to leave abuse cited by victims of abuse (the other being for the sake of their children). Wing Haven will provide opportunities to address all relevant topics for abused women including religion. Questions of faith will be facilitated through Bible studies and open discussion. Wing Haven is in the company of many other humanitarian organizations such as The Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and the Salvation Army who are motivated by a religious conviction to offer love and help but do not discriminate against or pressure the recipients in return for life-saving services.
